The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) awarded Galveston College and Prairie View A & M University a USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture Challenge Grant in order to host a conference entitled “Food Science Pathways: A SPECA Planning Conference”.

The purpose of the Galveston conference is to gather stakeholders to discuss expansion/realignment of the current Galveston College Culinary Arts curriculum to meet the needs of employers and other stakeholders. Attendees will discuss the concept of tying the GC associate degree program to 4-year universities for advanced education opportunities in food science; health – nutrition, obesity, wellness; organic and sustainable agriculture; and workforce development. Invitees will be leaders in community services, education, medicine, agriculture, commercial fishing, and the food industry.

Keynote speaker is Barton Seaver who is on a mission to restore our relationship with the ocean, the land, and with each other—through dinner. He has translated his illustrious career as a chef into his leadership of the Sustainable Seafood and Health Initiative at the Center for Health and the Global Environment at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. In this role, Barton spearheads initiatives to inform consumers and institutions about how our choices for diet and menus can promote healthier people, more secure food supplies, and thriving communities. http://www.bartonseaver.org/about
